What do you think of Lee's inaugural article? Agree or disagree? Love him or hate him, he's got opinions!

I think there's some helpful info hidden in that article somewhere.  I know I've played too aggressively before, giving away too much info before... that was helpful.

And he's dead on about the money thing.  I don't pay $150 for goyf x 4... I wanna play a green deck... I lose.  Period.   Exclamation point.

I actually quit Magic again indefinitely.  I'm just gonna go to prereleases, so if I start again, I'll know all the mechanics.

I absolutely agree with everything that Lee said his article.  I'm 36 years old now, and I have no illussions of ever being a competative player.

Kids - once you have one or more of these, it's over.  Seriously.  Not just in Magic, but everything.  Unless you have some innate talent or a prodigy where you don't have to practice, then you will have little to no time do dedicate to other things.  Until they start getting older, then you can start integrating them into things you do, if they are interested.  Otherwise, any serious intentions you have towards Magic or anything, is as the cost of something else, usually your kids/family.  (This may also apply to your wife/girlfriend.)

Money - Like other people on this board, I refuse to play $20 for a card.  Or $10, or $30, or $40.  I play with what I have, so I know going in, I'm probably going to loose if it's a constructed event.  (That's another reason, I will most likely not go to the April 12 tourney.  Not that I wouldn't like to play, I just know I don't have a chance with what I have.)  I mainly play limited, sealed or draft.  Yes, it's still costs money, but I get more enjoyment for my money at that time.  So, unless you're willing to come off the money to go get those cards, you can't play competitively, successfully.

Hobbies / Other interests - Sure you can have some of those, but any time spent with those, is time not spent doing what you're trying to be successful at.  This sort of goes back to kids.  You only have so much time.  To excel at one thing, you usually have to let something else fall to the wayside.  I'm mainly concentrating my effort on Guitar right now, but that means Magic, comics, manga, anime, games, all gets very limited if no time.  Then the guitar even has to wait in line after the above mentioned kids.

I could also go on about Lee's topic, but I think I've babbled long enough.   smiley

For the record, Lee does have kids. His son is quite the Halo player too.

Great article. Its all very true. The only thing that would have made it better is if it had Lee standing over an opponent slapping him. Or maybe a scene from the movie Godzilla...with Lee instead.

I hope my article discouraged anyone from tournament play. In fact, being 36 years old, I try to defy all of that. With 2 kids, I think I do pretty good for myself with an occasional Tourney Victory here and there smiley

It feels good to beat down kids! (sometimes literally) hehe

I plan to produce an article next week that contradicts or provides insight into defying those items I mentioned. In fact, the article is really about one of the things the PROs cannot talk about all too often, "self realization".

Thank You all so much for reading!!!

One more thing (or two). You should play to have fun! This was really meant for anyone who wants to play competitively. What you must overcome or realize in order to put the odds in your favor.

Do I think you HAVE to buy 4x Tarmagoyfs? NO Absolutely NOT! Does it help your chances of winning? 5/6 creature for 2 is pretty darn good! Nuff said!

If that becomes a shirt I'm buying one.

Oh and I said it in a different post but reiterating is good.  Great article, Lee!  Keep em coming!

It's rather unfortunate that bad or new players do not realize the things you posted in the article.  In fact, many people will deny it.  For similar reasons, they deny that rating means anything in Magic Online.  Sure it isn't as important assuming you haven't played much at all or are not anywhere near hitting your "true" rating.  But rating does show to a certain capacity how good of a player you are.  Again, it's unfortunate people do not realize it.

Interesting point. Magic Online ratings may not mean anything, now. However, as many WSOP Pros have come to terms with the Online community.  Whereas, at one time rediculed people who played online. In the future, I'm sure WOTC will work something out with invites to the top Online players too.

Everything is an indication of something. We don't always know what it is yet.

Can I have this written on the back of my LeeZilla shirt?
