That's exactly my point. "The nature of the beast" in draft for funzies is taking the most valuable card. In this case Mythic rare means virtually nothing. If in fact there is a "bomb" within the Mythic rare category, I would say it's no different than a bomb rare of the like.
What will hurt is the constructed value/necessity of a Mythic rare. I've heard people on this forum who have stated they could not possibly afford/justify buying a tarmagoyf for constructed magic. Now, it's possible we'll have something even more difficult to obtain. That stinks.

Please tell me to shut it if I start sounding like a broken record but I think many of you are missing an important factor. Gorf was super $$$ because it came out in a small set at the back end of a block. Thusly it was underdrafted and few of them were put into the secondary market. Another major factor for it's crazy $$$ is that it fit into 80% of Standard decks and sees playin every format. This was the perfect storm and I'm pretty sure MaRo has learned his lesson with this one.
Matter of fact, I think that high secondary market prices hurt MTG sales as people don't buy a box "in the hopes" of finding a Goyf. At least nobody I know. And retailers get most of there rares from players to resell. They know it's a losing financial endevor to rip packs in hopes of the money rare. It's like playing the lottory. Having many moderatly priced cards in a set give (me at least) a higher incentive to buy more boosters and draft more!
And the way I figure it, 4 or 5 of the Mythics might see constructed play reaching 30-35$. Any more than that and they risk encouraging an unhealthy secondary market that will make many Magic players very, very unhappy. So heres to hoping they have done their homework and want to keep the game healthy. I'm wagering they do.
My 2 cents. and sorry for repeating myself as I pretty much said the same thing in another post.

Excellent points, I've never really considered how heavily drafts create the secondary market levels.

Yes but you can draw those same parallels to Mutavault or Bitterblossom. Pretty high and pretty rare.

@Bigfiber,
People at Coolstuff do play a Tarmogoyf Lottery with Futuresight. At least a lot of people do. I know lots of people that do this outside of Coolstuff too. Unless a set recently came out...most people that I know take Futuresight packs...now Morningtide too. Both of them are on the backend of a set. That doesn't mean that people don't buy packs...and that certainly doesn't mean that there aren't an abundance of
Tarmogoyf
s out there...its just that they are universally useful in every format. Thats why they have that pricetag. If WOTC screws up and makes that mistake on a Mythic Rare...Gas Prices will seem like a discount for the price that the card will have.

Sure, but both cards won't approach 50 a piece. BB might as it's gonna see Extended play...Hey, stuff happens. ;P Honestly, I like the sets to have cards in the 20's-30's as it adds a lot to our drafts. Playing for fun is one thing, but as a grown up, I need to feel like my time is worth something more than a few laughs. Don't take that the wrong way, I don't care that much about the money or I'd spend all my time playing Poker...but at the end of the night, if you win, getting the 15-20 dollar card is sweet. Conformation of your greatness! (I'm so insecure...)
Hey, I make da big bucks at work! Gotta play for something!

Sorry man, but if a set is at the end of a block...many fewer packs are opened. Nature of the Beast as Lee said. People buying a random pack here or there is no where near the amount of packs cracked during the block at FNM's or that groups like my draft group pack.

Just think of this. In an 8 man draft there are 24 packs being distributed so there should be 3 Mythic Rares floating around every draft table. If they truely make the Mythic Rares..."Mythic"...then I really think that there is going to be some unbalanced decks in an 8 man draft. Here is hoping that Mythic Rares are on par with
Squire
.
I would think a Mythic Rare would have to be strictly better. So maybe something along the lines of "Mythic Squire" which is a 1/3 for one White mana. :-D :-P

I only say this for concern of the midrange to newbie player. I know that I'm going to be alright, because a "serious" Magic Player will be trading, drafting, buying the card if it's necessary. My concen is for the player that is on the border of their first BIG tourney or FNM and seeing them put themselves in a non-competitive bracket because it's too expensive to invest in.
Good Luck All

Nope, that is not what they mean by Mythic Rares. Mythic does not mean "Super Awesome" it just means...well, Mythic. I'd say Oona would be "Mythic".

Me and one of my friends bought a couple packs of magic and decided to draft decks. Ok two people is not enough to draft, but we did it anyway to get our minds trying to get into the drafting mindset.
I opened the first pack and found Bitterblossom, instinctively I just grabbed it, the rest of the cards didn't matter the overwhelming price had me. I fit it into the deck mainly because it was an aggro b/r deck and it just fit.
My idea of the mythic rare is people will grab it if they see it, mainly because of value, maybe Magic will create Rares that will have more value than the mythic rare. People will grab then look for other cards to work with it.
My mindset worked with Bitterblossom mainly because of versatility, I mean it's Bitterblossom it just makes the deck work. Now the fact that mythic rares can be useless might turn others away.
If a card has it's own versatility it will be drafted over anything.
Setting up different scenarios: one Morningtide pack, one Shards of Alara, and one Shadowmoor.(If this doesn't seem logical well it will work just to show different scenarios.)
1) One pack down you found a Bitterblossom and a bunch of cards that work well with it. second pack you find a Mythic Rare that works along with it, Who wouldn't grab it. Two pluses to grab It works well, and the resale price.
2) You have a deck well balanced so far after two packs. You find a Mythic Rare that contradicts the entire deck. Honestly I'd defensively draft it anyhow if it posed a threat, again two pluses to grab it to save yourself, and to again resale value.
3) Now you are about to start the final pack. The deck build you have so far works well together. The pack holds a Mythic Rare in its clutches. The card holds no value, it poses no threat unless combo'd with another Mythic Rare (the odds aren't there for the other to be there). What would you do?
Now there are a lot of different scenarios to put up. Now, the whole reason is to prove the Mythic Rare cannot be called better until the cards are actually made public. Now for reading this entire thing I would like to give you a cookie.
EDIT: Honestly, I believe the Mythic Rares are going to be Planeswalkers. (Sorry if people don't like me quoting myself..)

What about creating a part of the forums too go along with the Future Sets of Magic the Gathering? I wanted to throw out ideas about Shards of Alara and I don't know where to put them. I just put some quick math through my 16-year old head and came up with 15 different combinations for Planeswalkers:W U B R G W/U W/B W/R W/G U/B U/R U/G B/R B/G R/G. Maybe this is the Mythic Rares, 15 new planeswalkers? Magic is shifting towards a "Newbie" friendly game, who doesn't like another planeswalker's help?
Thank you, Infinite_Bob

All:
I agree with the probability of rare-drafting with the new class of cards. The question is, htough, will these card be worth it? I mean, how many rares are filed away in my minder, collecting dust? Will the Mystics be regulated to the same place?

I think the problem we're facing with "mythic rares" is what's coming up inside this conversation:
will
players
of the game pick them up or will
collectors
of the game want them?
personally, at my shop, we play for picks when we draft.
we put all the rares out- 1st place gets two picks and then it goes down the line in order of finishing place.
I've noticed an interesting dynanmic that I sometimes do myself:
do I pick the card I need or do I pick the card I want to sell?
This is the point when you ask yourself, "Why do I play Magic?
Do I play for fun or profit?"
Mythic rares, from what I understand, with make this line even more blured.
Do I pick the money card, or do I pick what I need?
Whether or not that is good for the game will be up of discussion for a long time...
... then again...
we haven't even seen them yet-
maybe we're wiggin' out over nothing?

What i see from people posting here, is they are gonna be pissed if they dont get the 1 in 8 Myth card, but just because they its going to be 1 in 8 does not mean in (For example) in 24 packs, logicaly there will be 3 myths but there could be 24 to none.
Also if you drafted a myth would you complain that no one else got one and you have a better chance of winning, also from previous set not all rares are great and not all rares are worth drafting who says these myth cards are going to be usefull or a bomb, could just be amazing cards that have no use or another bitterblossom!
But the best we can hope for is a equilbrium to be established.
Also this is my first post
