Wizards in Extended
«
on:

I have been thinking about a Wizard deck for Extended. The main deck would be focused on
Dark Confidant
,
Meddling Mage
, and
Voidmage Apprentice
. If you were to use
Declaration of Naught
and the CounterTop engine...I think you could make a hell of a deck. Here are all the cheap decent wizards in extended right now. Keep in mind that I said cheap. Some of the higher costed Wizards are good but...this needs to stay at a low curve because of
Dark Confidant
.
Hapless Researcher
Martyr of Frost
Information Dealer
Jushi Apprentice
Ringskipper
Vedalking Aethermage
Willbender
Voidmage Prodigy
Aphetto Grifter
Dark Confidant
Yixid Jailor
Aven Mindcensor
Azorius Guildmage
Meddlling Mage
Shadowmage Infiltrator
Ith, High Arcanist
With both
Meddling Mage
and
Declaration of Naught
...you can really shut down some decks. Do you think that this is viable?

I think it has lots of possibility. If we go with a U/B/r then we might definitely be able to make a splash.

Why UBr and not WUb? This would give
Meddling Mage
and
Azorius Guildmage
.

Yeah I guess the white is important, my thought was to set it up as a counterburn deck focused around wizards. But meddling mage is too important not to make central.

Don't forget
Patron Wizard
. I'll dig around for some Wizard decks I've seen...I'm almost sure there was a PTQ one that placed recently.

I love
Patron Wizards
...but the UUU cost might be a bit much for a 3 color deck. Remember that this will most often play as an aggro control style deck.

I made a crazy Wizards extended deck. I dunno how it would fare competitively, but it's pretty darned good. It's U/W... lots of counterspells, esp. wizards that sac to counter. Magus of the Moat, Magus of the Disk. A couple blinding angels and Akroma for the finisher. A lot of control involved, the games are always drawn out to up to 50 turns. I even had to put a Platinum Angel in there to prevent losing via over-drawing.
What I do is put the magus of the moat out, put out Tefeiri (sp?) Oblivion Ring a bunch of my own angels. Play Magus of the Disk flashed via Tefeiri... During my turn, blow the disk up, kill everything, including my Oblivion Rings. Clean board, except for my angels. Then I play Akroma.

Thats definetly not the kind of deck that I am looking to make.
I am looking to make an aggro control deck that features the following:
Dark Confidant
Meddling Mage
Voidmage Prodigy
Sensei's Divining Top
Counterbalance
Declaration of Naught
All the Wizards have 2 power and their abilities don't require them to tap. This means that they can play beatdown while maintaining control of both the board and the game. The list of wizards that I posted in the first post...all have important abilites that help develop this deck.

I know you're looking to keep the cost down, but I think you'd be remiss if you skipped over
Meloku, the Clouded Mirror
. Also I think
Fact or Fiction
would sit in this. And maybe, since this isn't a green deck and you can't put Goyf in here, you might consider
Psychatog
.

Then
Dark Confidant
would have to be out. I am not ruling this idea out...its just seems like...if I go that route...next level blue would be the better choice. I will gather my thoughts and post a few decks when I get a chance. Does anyone have any lists that they would like to contribute?

lol... I know, I was just reminiscing about my wacky decks.
I don't mean to sound like an a-hole, but I mean... hasn't countertop been done ad-nauseam?
All I'm saying is there's a lot of cards out there, I keep seeing the same 3-4 rares over and over again with just a change in silly commons and uncommons that work towards the same old goal.
Creativity is kinda dwindling these days.

So I've been toying with it, and if I get the chance I'd love to playtest it, but the deck seems fun. I do feel though that it might be better just being a modified Psychatog deck with its control aspects...

You are probably right. I didn't get a chance to get online...we had an always exciting Family reunion this weekend...and surprise surprise...there was no internet. I did get to goldfish it and came to the same conclusion. Post Extended Rotation though...this might be an idea to consider.
Meddling Mage
will be gone...but so will 90% of the combo decks. I always wondered why
Psychatog
wasn't playing a bigger roll in the meta. I might give that a try.
