I want to hold an UNOFFICIAL DRAFT at my house and I was wondering what I should do and what I shouldn't? sad

First problem, I need to get cards. I was thinking of charging $13 for each person which would be plenty to buy each person 3 packs, but then again these will be my friends and some family and they spend a lot already.

Second problem, I'm not quite sure how a draft goes. I have watched many videos actually watching the draft process but nothing about how the tourney is organized.

Third, Should I have snacks, or would they be dangerous ground while playing with new cards.

Fourth, How many people are there normally at a draft table? If there is a different number of people do you see any problems?

I need people's opinions PLEASE.

There's usually 8 players in a draft.
You can pick up a box of boosters (12 draft sets) for $80-$100.
I recommend doing a draft like a day 2 Grand Prix. The 8 of you draft as normal. Then you play each other Swiss style. After the first round you make sure the pairings have people with similar records. Then after 3 rounds you will have a winner. Then, you could draft another box and continue playing based on match records.

If it's friendly, have food have drinks, that's the way Magic used to be smiley

Try to plan in advance so that you can order a box online. They are significantly cheaper even including shipping prices.

I'd recommend you'd get some basic lands and write down numbers on them and randomize those cards and hand them out the the players for their seating number. Just makes it really easy to get seating done quickly.

Another idea is to find a card shop that sells packs at draft price (I am fortunate enough to have two near me.)  This way, you can keep costs down.  Buying a box online is also a good way to go, and if you have eight persons...

$80.00 Booster box (coolstuffinc.com) has a GREAT deal on these
24 packs for drafting, remaining for you
$10 per person x 8 persons = Cost of Box

As to running the draft...swiss rounds are great.  If you can, run a winners/no-so-winners bracket, and offer booster/card prizes for the winners.  Another route, and one I prefer is that all rares/foils are taken at the end of the tourney and the personal who finishes first chooses first, going down until each person chooses a rare/foil.  You return back until all rares/foils are taken.

One final thing is appoint someone as "judge", perferb. someone who is an actual judge, or at least accepted by all as the final word.  This way, if any issues do arise, that they are handled by one person, and that person really has nothing at stake (AKA the Judge does not play)  Give the judge a booster pack or three as a payment, and there you go!

I hope my two pennies help, and good luck!

Everyone has two cents to put in and if everyone has them to put in I'd be pretty rich!
