I figured I would open up a spot to discuss the card that mananation was awesome enough to receive.

Selkie Hedge Mage   2(u/g)
Creature -- Merfolk Wizard (Uncommon)
When Selkie Hedge Mage comes into play, if you control two or more forests, you may gain 3 life.
When Selkie Hedge Mage comes into play, if you control two or more islands, you may return target tapped creature to its owner's hand.
2/2

Illustrator -- Larry McDougal

I really like this guy. He isn't quite a bomb...but I think that he is really good. (U/G) is my favorite color combination so...I am always happy to see good playable cards like this.

On a side note...I really want to see a (U/G) Legend. There is only one (U/G) Legend in all of Magic. Care to guess what it is? (Note that I mean (U/G) only...not multicolor cards including the colors.)

Um, wrong.

Experiment Kraj is a legendary creature - Ooze, Momir Vig is a legendary Creature  - Elf Wizard and both of those are UG only.

So, to this card:

Trick, I believe you mentioned that with two of them you can go infinite.  This is only true if you have some way of tapping them (I would not suggest attacking as they are very liable to get blocked and killed).  Springleaf Drum is a good idea, and can help to pay for the second Selkie.

I think this guy is really great, it is relaly too bad he does nothing against non-attacking utility creatures or bitterblossom, but that would jsut be greedy.

My real problem with this guy is the same problem I have with the entire cycle: the fact that you need to have islands or forests in play.  This is a format where a UG deck could feasibly have 4-6 vivids, 4 reflecting pools, 4 UG hybrid lands, 4 yavimaya coast, then some additional utility lands such as mouth of ronom, urza's factory... this leaves room for anywhere from 6 to 10 basics, and needing to split those in some way between islands and forests relaly drastically reduces your opportunity to HAVE 2 islands or 2 forests (or both) anytime before turn seven or eight.

Even in block it is quite rare to see more basics than nonbasics even in two colour decks.  Does this reduce this guy's playability?  should he get played anyway?  Because I LOVE the deurgar hedgemage, I'm just worried about not having the plains and mountains to actually make him better than a grey ogre.

I didn't directly say that they would go infinite, just that if you needed life and had two, then they could in theory bounce each other. I mean even aside from being tapped, you'd still need to pay the mana and cast them.

But yeah, the mana restrictions are interesting and we'll see if he can land safely in constructed smiley

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that you had said that, but simply that you had indicated that you could recurse them... which is untrue unless you have a teferi in play (to give it flash soas to bounce it in reponse to damage going on the stack), or a springleaf drum.  I was just seeking to clarify is all.  I think that it's really good, if the mana thing works out I could definitely see it seeing play in either a mono blue deck or a UG deck.  Might actually be more likely to see play in mono blue than anything else hoenstly, since that's when you are most likely to actually HAVE the islands to use his man-o-war ability.

does it make mono blue viable again?  who knows!  But there sure are a lot of blue spells in this format, some of them have to be good enough to build a deck around.  Maybe start with Gavin's platinum angel deck from regionals and redesign it with eventide...

Sidenote: Lee - "It's Friday, I'm in Love"  tongue

So the card is decent. I don't understand why they gave two blue creature types to it though. Merfolk-Wizard? I guess they consider Merfolk some sort of elf? Anyways...

It would have been GODLY if it returned any creature, not just a tapped one, though! But for its casting cost, pwr/tough, and if you have two of each/either land in play, its a real solid card. I agree with ester that you would be more likely to see it in mono U than UG since Man-O-War rules!
