Great interview. I like how he picked up with Game Theory. I have touched on this several times in the forums...
Lightning Bolt
is overpowered. The question that many people ask is why. The best answer is in the form of an example. People are willing to sacrifice a land to play
Lightning Bolt
with
Shard Volley
. This by itself should explain simply how good
Lightning Bolt
is. My comment on this was that a sorcery speed
Lightning Bolt
would be extremely powerful...but would be on par with the power creep that has been happening.
Chapin also mentioned
Cancel
<
Counterspell
. This is more of WOTCs stance on balancing Blue's power level. It is not a coincidence that Blue is at the top of every format for powerlevel. Even when they nerf down the cards...after each set Blue ends up being the top deck. Faeries is the most recent example of this. I don't consider
Counterspell
to be overpowered...I consider the color that the card is to be overpowered.
Both of these examples are great examples of the different angles of Game Theory. Power Level and Balancing are very similar but each differs enough to be classified seperately. Understanding why these cards, amongst others, is a great way of picking out that next breakout card.
Again this was a great interview and I am really looking forward to his next format breaking deck. Thanks for the mention btw Trick.
Edit:
Oddly enough I had a kid ask me what I thought of his deck at the prerelease. The first thing I noticed is that he only had 13-14 lands. I asked him why...he told me that he needed room to run all his spells and creatures. I strongly agree with Chapin here. Understand your deck and you will do better. Lands are the most important part of 99.9% of decks. I thought this was kind of comical. He had down the golden rule of 40 cards...but he stuffed the deck full of cards and lacked the lands. I found it quite comical that Chapin would touch on that during the interview.

Thanks Trick, great "Radio Program". Look out Rush Limbaugh!
Chapin had soooo many good things to say. Honestly, this guy gets it. He plays the game competitively and has fun while doing it.
I was kind hoping you would have asked him my question...
